FAS Club History

In April 1997 a group of parents met with Firbank Grammer School's Head Swim coach, Mrs. Alwyn Barrett to discuss ways the community could use the talents of Mrs. Barrett (a level 3 coach) and Firbank's new and extremely well appointed swimming, diving, physical conditioning and gymnasium facility.

Firbank Aquastar Inc. was incorporated in May 1997, with an initial membership of approximately 40 people. By 2000/2001, Club membership had grown to 220. Alwyn continued as Head Coach until May 2006 when she retired from this position.

The Club has had continued success at both State and National levels and at the Presentation Night in 2006, Alwyn was awarded Life Membership-in recognition of her dedication over a 9 year period.

In June 2006 Angus Barnes, from the Knox Pymble Club in Sydney, took over as Head Coach. His appointment heralded a new phase in the Club's history-using modern technology and training methods to continue the Club's impressive swimming record.

In April 2010 Jason Cooper, from TSS Aquatic on the Gold Coast in Queensland was appointed Head Coach. Jason brings with him extensive experience working in schools and with clubs based in school programs. Jason is a former Australian swimmer and his ability to relate to the swimmers he coaches is one of his strengths.
